Bleggio Superiore

To some extend antique traditions and ancient faith make Bleggio Superiore an open-air museum

The villages belonging to the municipality of Bleggio Superiore (the Italian term “superiore” means “upper, superior”), so to speak the upper part of the Bleggio elevated plain, are characterized by their rural character and their deep bonds with traditions.

According to legends, the little village of Balbido has been inhabited by whiches, who were blamed for constantly recurring natural catastrophes in the surroundings. In order to take remedial action, the inhabitants established five iron crosses at the entrance of the village, one of which is still visible today. Another pecularity of Balbido are the wall paintings, real masterpieces of art, telling scenes of everyday life…

All these elements make Bleggio Superiore a kind of open-air museum, which can be experienced in a promenade across the single villages. Worth seeing is also the monument “alla Croce”, to which wondrous strenghts are attached, as well as the S. Dionisio, Rustico and Eleuterio church, a seldom example in the area of Trentino for Renaissance buildings. Worth noticing is also the village of Rango, which by the Touring Club Italiano has been declared one of the most beautiful places of Italy. Rango and its fountains, halls and inner courtyards is a masterpiece of rural architecture.

The municipal area of Bleggio Superiore is a perfect starting point for hikes and there are also some picknick areas.
