Hike to the Christomannos eagle

Guided hike from Ciampedie to Roda di Vaèl (Rotwand), along one of the oldest paths in Val di Fassa, rediscovering the lives of mountain shepherds before the advent of tourism.

The walk begins at Ciampedie, along the Alta Via dei Fassani trail, where every step opens a small window into the valley's history. Your guide will be Andrea Vian, a certified mid-mountain guide, who will tell stories of the Fassa Valley of yesteryear: the one before tourism, made of fields to cultivate, seasons to follow, potatoes, wheat, rye, and small livestock farms. Little by little, over the centuries, milk began to be turned into cheese, and rural life left deep traces on the landscape, in the alpine pastures and mountain dairies, and in the community's memory. The trail also goes through a beautiful and thriving natural environment. Among the Dolomite flowers, you can spot edelweiss and nigritelle orchids; walking quietly, you might hear the whistle of sentinel marmots, notice the entrances to their burrows, and, with a bit of luck, see them playing or basking in the sun. After reaching the Rifugio Roda di Vaèl mountain hut, the route continues along the wide Hirzelweg path at the foot of the Masaré, up to the monument dedicated to Theodor Christomannos: a large, three-metre-tall bronze eagle overlooking the Fassa and Val d'Ega (Eggental) valleys. From here, the view opens up, and so does the story: Christomannos was a mountaineer, visionary, and pioneer of Dolomite tourism. He was responsible for promoting the Great Dolomites Road and the mountain hut at the foot of Roda di Vaèl.

Meeting point: every Monday at 9:30 at the top station of the cable car. The route will be decided on the spot by the guide, depending on the group. Duration: approx. 6 hours. Difficulty: medium. Children from 8 years old, used to mountain walking. Route not suitable for pushchairs. Dogs allowed.

Price: free activity organised by the Catinaccio (Rosengarten) Buffaure lift company, included in the Panorama Pass, the Dolomiti Supersummer pass, or the lift ticket. Booking is compulsory online or at the Fassa Sport offices in the valley by 18:00 on the previous day. Minimum 5, maximum 20 participants.

Appropriate clothing and footwear are required. Arrival at the Vael by 12:30 for a lunch break (optional packed lunch or at the Roda di Vaèl and Baita Marino Pederiva mountain huts). In case of bad weather, the hike is cancelled.
