Lake Lamar

The charming Lake Lamar is more famous than Lago Santo

The glacial lakes of Lamar lie in the Valle dei Laghi at the foot of the eastern slope of the Paganella massif, slightly above the village of Terlago. Lake Santo formed after a landslide hit the original Lake Lamar, splitting it into two parts of different dimensions. Since then, these two bodies of water are also known as the Lakes of Lamar. The 450 metres long and 130 metres wide lake stretches over a surface of 0.045 sq km and has a maximum depth of 13 metres.

The surrounding beech and coniferous forests are a natural habitat for many animals, including birds and small mammals. The shores are partially rocky and grassy. In summer, a lifeguard watches over the people on the extensive meadow on the western shore as they are having a refreshing swim in the lake. The shades of different colours of Lake Lamar vary based on the season and the light conditions, giving it a mysterious appearance. In the lake live fish species including chub, pike, carp, perch and tench, which is why many anglers gather on the shores as well. The area surrounding the lake is crossed by different MTB routes. The hiking paths are suitable also for families with children looking for a relaxing stroll in nature. The lakes are accessible via an easy hike from Monte Terlago.

On the southern shore, about 30 metres above the water level, the so-called abyss of Lamar (abisso di Lamar) opens up. This cave of inestimable geologic value tells the story of the evolution of the area's subsoil. Entering the cave requires specialist caving experience. However, its fascinating geological features, that is cliffs, cracks and dark stains in the points where it touched water, can be clearly seen also from far.

In 2026 the Lamar Lakes were awarded the important recognition "Bandiera Blu" for the excellent water quality and the particular attention dedicated to the environment and sustainable services.
