The San Romedio Pilgrimage Site lies hidden in the woods of the Val di Non valley - a place of spiritual power with tiered buildings

The bike park in Coredo, located in the hamlet of Dossi, attracts us several times a year. With free admission, it features a pump track, jump lines of increasing difficulty, and a bike trial area. On this June day, however, we use the site as the starting point for a short cycle tour to a remarkable destination: the San Romedio Sanctuary, perched on a limestone rock.
It consists of several churches and chapels built to fit the natural rock formation. Its history dates back centuries: The various buildings originate from different eras, with the oldest chapel dating back to around the year 1000 AD, built above the tomb of Saint Romedius. A total of 131 steps connect the levels. In 1809, Tyrolean freedom fighter Andreas Hofer also made a pilgrimage here with 600 followers to seek support for the uprising against the Bavarian and French troops.
The route initially leads us through the woods surrounding the bike park. Here, the MTB trails cross paths with the artworks of the 'Arte in Bosco' open-air art exhibition: Crafted from natural wood, these sculptures also line the adjacent 'Viale dei Sogni' (Avenue of Dreams). We then make a loop through the village of Coredo, head towards the Via San Romedio road, and soon reach the right shore of Lake Coredo. Continuing north along the lakeshore, we pass neighbouring Lake Tavon.
A short stretch through the woods away from the lakes follows, with a stop at Agritur Agostini on the outskirts of Predaia. Regional produce is used here to prepare traditional Val di Non dishes, served on the terrace. After our break, only a short ride separates us from San Romedio. The stacked architecture perched on the rock spur is impressive from afar. On site, a bar invites guests to rest. We first visit the inner courtyard, then climb the steep steps and pass through corridors.
They are lined with ex-voto tablets and messages of gratitude, until we reach the highest chapel and the viewing terrace. To return towards Predaia, we initially follow the same route, before cycling along the opposite shore of the lakes back to Coredo Bike Park. You can also reach San Romedio on foot: A hike lasting just over two hours starts at the basilica in Sanzeno.
