Alba di Canazei

The village extends at the foot of Mt Colac (2,715 m a.s.l.), the Gran Vernel (3,210 m a.s.l.), the Sella Group and the Marmolada. As its Ladin name "Dèlba" suggests, the locality is characterised by its Ladin culture and was named after a pale rock wall (Dèlba in Ladin) called Dolèda which overlooks the village. In former times an isolated house was situated below the cliff. The inhabitants were said to be so protective of their property that they enclosed it with special wooden fences made of planks which were tied together with woven twigs known as "roc". Because of this custom, the inhabitants still have the nickname "Roc".

The St. Anthony the Great church (chiesa di Sant'Antonio Abate) was first mentioned in a document from 1410, the year in which Cristano da Alba was granted permission to build a small chapel by the bishop of Bressanone. The external part still gleams in late Gothic style with only one small modern element. The choir and the central nave were decorated with stunning Renaissance frescoes and three apostles which were probably part of a larger apostle cycle. In the recess above the choir you can see a reproduction of the Resurrected Christ standing on a pedestal with the inscription "CHRISTVS".

Alba is a natural oasis, as well as an ideal starting point for hikes and alpine tours in the impressive surrounding mountain world. From here, you can also undertake cycling tours along the cycle path, MTB tours in the mountains or the bike parks and horseback rides. A highlight for children is the "Ciampark" in Alba, the highest playground of the Fassa Valley. In winter, you can make unforgettable winter hikes with or without snowshoes and skis or practise alpine skiing, snowboarding or cross-country skiing in the Belvedere Pordoi and Alba Ciampac skiing areas. They are easily accessible thanks to the ski lifts starting from Alba. Ice hockey and ice skating enthusiasts can spend moments in good company at the "Gianmario Scola" ice stadium, the seat of the Hockey Club Fassa which plays in the highest league in Italy. In 1994, this stadium hosted the Ice Hockey World Championship together with the cities of Bolzano and Milan.
