Fontanazzo

Fontanazzo (Fontanac in Ladin) is a typical Ladin village and a hamlet of the municipality of Mazzin in the Fassa Valley. The locality was already mentioned as "Vudenates" in documents from 1142, making this place name one of the oldest ones in the entire valley. Fontanazzo owes its name to its numerous springs and has preserved its authentic character as a mountain village to this day. It is composed of the two settlements Fontanazzo di Sopra and Fontanazzo di Sotto. The beautifully decorated town hall in Fontanazzo di Sotto boasts a fresco of St. Magdalene and several low-reliefs depicting ancient professions. The Virgin of Carmel parish church was built in 1643. Its double-pitched façade, the shingled bell tower and the polygonal apse inside the monument are its most distinctive elements. Near the church stands the "El Pèster de Fascia", the shepherd of Fassa, a bronze statue built in honour of all shepherds, who, for centuries played an important role for the life and economy of mountain communities.

In Fontanazzo you can practise several sports, including trekking, cycling, alpine skiing, cross-country skiing and even ice climbing. An easy walking path starting from Campitello runs between Fontanazzo and Campestrin and is suitable for baby carriages and parents with baby slings. Ice climbers can put themselves to the test on the waterfall, which is easily accessible from Fontanazzo. Please note: ice climbing should be practised only by skilled and experienced climbers. In winter the skiing areas of the Fassa Valley are easily accessible thanks to the nearby ski lifts.
