Forno is located in the narrowest part of the Fiemme Valley, right where the valley descends towards Predazzo. Geographically, the village lies in the Fiemme Valley and this is why in former times it was also known as Forno di Fiemme. Forno is a hamlet of the municipality of Moena and was first inhabited in the 13th century by miners from Belluno. They lived in this area and built furnaces to smelt the iron which was extracted in the mines of the Monti Mulat and Vezzena. Mining was temporarily interrupted in the 16th century before being practised again starting from the late 19th century and in 1950 the population gave it up completely. The only evidence which survived to this day is the typical accent of the Belluno dialect which is still part of the Ladin dialect spoken in Forno.
The 'Ciasa Topani' and the 'Casa De Silvestro' are two buildings in an ancient district of the Comunità di Fiemme. Ciasa Topani boasts a fresco dating back to the first half of the 17th century, a small wooden veranda and a vaulted entrance with stone steps. The Casa de Silvestro is enriched with wonderful Neoclassical decorations and a fresco from 1792. The San Lazzaro church is the only church with an adjoining cemetery of the municipality of Moena. For centuries, the priest celebrating the Holy Masses in Forno had to reach the village on foot from Moena. The locals wanted to have their own priest and therefore collected some money to support him - an important step towards independence.
Forno is a true paradise for people who would like to spend a quiet holiday in nature. Passionate hikers can choose from a wide network of hiking paths in the surrounding mountains, whereas cyclists can discover the Fassa and Fiemme Valleys along the cycle path connecting the two valleys. Other activities you can practise here are cross-country skiing along the several tracks and the official Marcialonga race track, ski mountaineering and alpine skiing in the Alpe di Lusia and Latemar Dolomites skiing areas.
