Sorte

This small mountain hamlet with slightly more than 100 inhabitants is situated at the foot of the Sass da Ciamp. The village is a hamlet of the municipality of Moena and the eponymous administrative centre which lies in the vicinity. Here, Ladin culture has survived to this day, thanks to the old haylofts which are visible in the village and the still widely spoken Ladin language . The houses are gathered around the St Joseph church (chiesa di S. Giuseppe) which overlooks the centre. It was built in 1685 and consecrated by the then bishop of Trento Giovanni Michele Spaur. The current church replaced the previous church which was erected in the same place in 1645. The monument features a single-pointed façade, rectangular windows and a bell tower on its left side. Along the path between Moena and Sorte stands the St Mark wayside shrine (campitello di San Marco) created by the artist Valentino Rovisi and restored in 2001. The monument is dedicated to St Mark and each side of it shows a different Evangelist.

The area around Sorte is particularly suitable for numerous hikes, mountain bike and bike tours. A circular MTB tour starts from the St Vigil church in the centre of Moena and takes you to Sorte, Peniola (or Penìa) and Medil before returning to the starting point. This 12-km long route has 451 metres of elevation gain and runs across the Prato di Sorte and past the hamlets of the municipality of Moena. The administrative centre and Sorte are connected by an about 6-km long hiking path with a 291-metre climb and 229-metre drop. This tour can be extended to the Malga Panna, an old mountain hut which was turned into a renowned Michelin-starred restaurant.

The Prato di Sorte meadow can be discovered during an easy, 5.5-km walk with only 61 metres of elevation gain. The starting point is the St Vigil church in Moena. The itinerary is particularly suitable for families with children and baby carriages, as well as bikes and mountain bikes. Sorte is accessible also via the Val di Fassa cycle path which turns into the race track of the legendary cross-country ski race Marcialonga. This event is a true highlight for fans, professional and amateur athletes alike.
