Vallonga

Vallonga, a hamlet of the municipality of San Giovanni di Fassa/Sèn Jan, is one of the oldest and most typical localities of the Fassa Valley

The small hamlet of Vallonga (Valongia in Ladin) at 1,513 m a.s.l. extends along the road to the Passo di Costalunga. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages when it was a hostel for shepherds. In 1750, as the John of Nepomuk church was built, the hamlet was enlarged and turned into a village. The easterly oriented John of Nepomuk church stands in the village centre. It features a double-pitched façade and a sacristy on the right side. It houses a steeple with a pyramid-shaped roof. The monument was restored in 1944. The huge statue of Christ the King painted by the artist M. Anes in 1980 was removed. If you are into Ladin culture or would like to discover it in all its facets you can do so by walking through this village characterised by historic haylofts and traditional farms.

In summer you can undertake several hikes in Vallonga and in the surrounding mountains. "Sulla Via degli antichi pastori erranti" (on the path of the old wandering shepherds) is the name of an easy circular 7.1-km long hike with only 245 metres of altitude difference. This walk starts in Vigo and passes Tamion and Vallonga before taking you back to Vigo. The excursion is suitable for families with children as well. In winter, Vallonga turns into a winter sports paradise. Here, you will find numerous cross-country ski tracks crossing the entire valley, ski mountaineering routes and snowshoe hikes, as well as different, easily accessible skiing areas in the vicinity.
