From the City Museum to the scenic dome of the Mart

Urban trekking in the historic centre of Rovereto. A route through a kilometre of stories and characters that made the city famous.

Just one kilometre, but full of surprises. The route crosses the city along a stretch that acts as an open-air urban narrative.

The tour starts at the City Museum (Museo della Città), housed in the 18th-century Palazzo Sichart, and immediately overlooks the Leno stream, which can be admired from the arch of the Ponte Forbato.

Continue towards Piazza del Podestà, scenically framed by two Venetian-style buildings: Palazzo Pretorio, now the town hall, and the Castle, which has housed the MITAG (Italian War History Museum of Rovereto) since 1921. Right below the fortress, you will find the rooms dedicated to First World War artillery.

Then, head back up towards the heart of Rovereto along Via della Terra. In Piazza San Marco, stop to admire the façade featuring the Lion of Saint Mark, the symbol of Venice's patron saint. Continue through Porta San Marco, built at the edge of the town during the period of Venetian rule in Rovereto.

In the centre of Campiello del Trivio, a monument provides an opportunity to reflect on the extensive damage the city suffered during the First World War, being just a few kilometres from the Austro-Italian front.

Next to the entrance portal of Palazzo Todeschi-Micheli, take a moment to read the curious plaque commemorating the thirteen-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who was a guest of Baron Todeschi on the evening of Christmas Day 1769.

Upon arriving in Piazza Battisti, reach the Bontadi-COBO Collection to enjoy a coffee while listening to the story of a business that has lasted for generations. Then, continue towards Piazza Rosmini to admire the elegant Palazzo del Ben.

At the start of Corso Bettini, the 18th-century thoroughfare once called Corso Nuovo, a plaque recounts Goethe's passage during his journey through Italy. A stop is a must in front of the Teatro Zandonai, the first theatre in Trentino, named after the Rovereto composer Riccardo Zandonai (1883–1944).

The walk connects the ancient heart of the city to the Mart (Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto), designed by Mario Botta. It has become a symbol of the city thanks to its iconic glass dome. Beneath it lies a modern agora, a space designed to tell the story of a changing Rovereto, without forgetting its roots.

Reduced: €7 for holders of the Museum Pass or Trentino Guest Card (maximum 6 adults with a Trentino Guest Card per experience), children and young people aged 6 to 26, and those accompanying people with reduced mobility
Free: children up to 5 years old and people with reduced mobility

The service requires a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 30 participants.

Booking is required by 5 pm on the Friday before the visit for daytime tours, and by 5 pm on the Saturday for evening tours. You can register online or at the tourist information offices in Rovereto and Brentonico.
