The municipality of Luserna at 1,330 m a.s.l., one of the most beautiful villages of Italy, is home to 271 inhabitants. Luserna is only a few minutes from Lavarone.
Luserna is well-known for being the last Cimbrian linguistic island. This language is a sort of Medium High German with a Bavarian accent and is one of the oldest germanic dialects still spoken. In Luserna, Cimbrian has been spoken for more than 1,000 years and is still kept alive by most of its inhabitants. In this language, the municipality of Luserna is known as "Kamou vo Lusérn". Both the Province of Trento and the Region of Trentino commit to protecting the cultural uniqueness of the Cimbrian language by publishing periodically some articles in Cimbrian language in the daily newspaper L'Adige. Furthermore, some private TV channels broadcast weekly newscasts in Cimbrian. Luserna, which lies above the Venetian Valdastico, hosts the Centro Documentazione Luserna - Documentationszentrum Lusérn, a documentation centre dedicated to the Cimbrian language, which used to be spoken by the inhabitants of all the high plateaus.
Winter sports enthusiasts can have fun in the Ski Area Alpe Cimbra and in the Skirama Dolomiti Adamello Brenta. In summer, mountain bike lovers can try the "100 km dei Forti" cycle trail, a very famous trail which is particularly appreciated for its uniqueness and for the many different landscapes including alpine pastures, mountain passes, meadows, forests and fortresses on the different high plateaus it runs across. The paths are mainly unpaved. Another trail you shouldn't miss is the itinerary towards the Monterovere pass. The asphalted but very challenging road is very narrow and steep and leads through narrow, unlit tunnels. However, the stunning views of the Valsugana and Lake Caldonazzo are definitely worth the effort.
