The original Latin name of Castelfondo, Castrum Fundi, should evoke the logistic and military function of this village. In fact, the outposts of Castrin and delle Palade, impressive fortresses and guardposts used for defensive purposes against barbaric assaults, can be reached via the village of Castelfondo.
On the 1st January 2020, the village of Castelfondo went from being an independent municipality to becoming part of the new municipality of Borgo d'Anaunia, together with the municipalities of Fondo and Malosco. The village of Castelfondo is composed of three centres: La Villa, Platz and Cologna. Its long history as an important agricultural centre shines through in the elegant rustic houses scattered in the entire area. Remarkable noble residences are Casa Lorenzetti and Casa dalla Chiesa. Another important monument you shouldn't miss is the parish church consecrated to S. Nicolò, the patron saint of the village. This Gothic sacral building was erected between 1508 and 1530 and expanded in the previous century. Inside the church you can admire some 16th century frescoes and a Baroque altar.
Don't miss Castello di Castelfondo. This ancient fortress is surrounded by dense forests and was once the scene of some meaningful events in the history of the Val di Non. It stands on a rocky cliff overlooking the village of Castelfondo and was probably built in Roman times. The numerous residential buildings around the main tower were added from the 14th century onwards. Currently the castle is a private residence and can therefore not be visited.
