Fondo

Fondo is the main village of the Alta Val di Non. Surrounded by verdant hills and valleys on a high plateau it is an ideal holiday destination

Particularly appreciated for its natural and cultural richness, Fondo in the Val di Non is a wonderful mountain village at almost 1,000 m a.s.l. and home to 1,500 citizens. Since 1st January 2020, Fondo has been part of the new municipality of Borgo d'Anaunia which is composed of the villages of Fondo, Malosco and Castelfondo. Fondo is both the administrative centre of the municipality and the village where the roads to the Passo Palade, the Passo Mendola and the passo Tonale meet. Furthermore, it is also the birthplace of the Italian futurist artist Fortunato Depero.

The Rio Sass canyon is now accessible via boardwalks and stairways. Here you can admire swirling waters, waterfalls, kettle holes, fossils, stalagmites and stalactites. Recently, the course of the Rio Fondo stream was barred to create Lake Smeraldo. This artificial water basin in the north of the valley, is now a fascinating natural attraction and a symbol of the village. Other interesting lakes are Lago di Santa Maria and Lago Tret near the settlement of Tret.

In winter, Fondo becomes the scene of the Ciaspolada, one of the most important winter sports events of Trentino which attracts numerous athletes from all over the world every year. The participants run in the snow with snowshoes, called ciaspole. During the last years the number of participants coming from all over the world has increased significantly, exceeding 6,000 people.
