Description
The Torbole Sbigolada is organised by the Torbole Sbigolada Committee, with the patronage of the Municipality of Nago-Torbole.
The event typically takes place on Shrove Sunday, which in 2025 falls on Sunday 2 March, in the town's historic Piazza Goethe.
The Torbole Sbigolada: a popular gastronomic festival since 1874.
Research carried out at the Innsbruck historical archive unearthed a newspaper from 1874, containing an interesting piece of news about the village of Torbole. At that time, the village was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the article reported that, in Torbole itself, in the main square, spaghetti dressed with "aole" (small lake sardines) was cooked and offered to the public at Carnival time. This is the oldest reliable record of a tradition that has been handed down for over a century. Throughout the afternoon, several hundred kilos of spaghetti, cooked and then dressed with sardine sauce and extra virgin olive oil, are distributed free of charge to the people of Torbole and to all the guests present. The sauce is prepared using only sardines caught in Lake Garda and EVO oil from the Torbole, Riva and Arco area.
The event attracts many visitors every year, so much so that it is estimated that between 4,000 and 5,000 portions of spaghetti with EVO oil and lake sardines are distributed throughout the day. The event is enlivened by live music and, for the younger ones, entertainment is provided by specially hired magicians and clowns.
