“100 km dei Forti” stage 1: Luserna High Plateau

The first stage of this mountain bike tour allows mountain bikers to discover the meadows of Passo Vezzena and the Luserna High Plateau

The Kaiserjägerstraße (Strada del Menador) branches off State Road 349 near Monterovere, from, leading down to Levico Terme and Caldonazzo. After about 300 m on this road, the path signposted “100 km dei Forti” begins on the right, heading towards Passo Vezzena. Soon, it turns into a forest path, winding through the woods to the meadows of Vezzena at 1,470 m a.s.l., where the Cima Verle mountain hut is located. While riding downhill, we pass the remains of Forte Busa di Verle.

At Passo di Vezzena, we choose the road to Luserna (SP 9) and immediately afterwards take the forest path on the left towards Bisele. Now we are surrounded by the alpine meadows of Luserna, a wide carpet of flowers and herbs. The road ascends through the woods to the Malga Croiere mountain hut and continues above the Val d’Astico to the Malga Campo mountain hut, which offers typical local dishes. The ideal place for our lunch break!

After our well-deserved break, we cycle uphill to the impressive Forte Campo Luserna at 1,550 m a.s.l. Our tour proceeds further to the Millegrobbe hut and the village of Luserna, well-known for its German-speaking minority, the Cimbrians. A visit to the local documentation centre with its museum halls exploring the culture and nature of the high plateau, is recommended. Now, our mountain bike tour heads slightly downhill to the small village of Masetti. The first stage of the “ 100 km dei Forti” ends at the Laghetto mountain hut, near our starting point in Monterovere.
