In some areas of Trentino snowshoeing has been practised for a long time. Snowshoes allow to easily float on the snow and thus undertake unforgettable hikes also in winter.
In former times, snowshoes were primarily used by hunters and farmers. Ancient snowshoe models were composed of leather strips enclosed by a circular wooden frame and strapped to the shoes thanks to a belt. However, with the introduction of new and more efficient means of transport by the end of the 19th century, the use of snowshoes diminished. In recent years, the handiness of snowshoes was rediscovered and they have been gaining an increasing popularity. Modern snowshoes are made of light, plastic-like materials and can be rented in the numerous rentals.
Trentino boasts an extensive network of snowshoe itineraries and in the course of time snowshoeing competitions and events have increased. Popular examples of such events are the famous "Ciaspolada" in the Val di Non which is held every year near Fondo and attracts numerous participants every year.
Below you can find several snowshoe itineraries in Trentino's mountains. Have fun!
