Below are some guidelines to ensure that travelling by public transport in Trentino is an enjoyable experience for you and your four-legged friend
In principle, dogs are permitted on public transport in Trentino, provided there is enough space and they do not disturb other passengers.
On local public transport (buses):
The Trentino transport system, “Trentino Trasporti”, comprises local buses, the Trento-Malè-Marilleva Railway Line, and city buses in Trento and Rovereto. Small dogs that can be held in your arms are transported free of charge. You must buy a ticket for larger four-legged companions; this excludes assistance dogs. Regardless of size, all dogs must be kept on a lead, wear a muzzle, and not disturb other passengers.
On trains:
Dogs are allowed on trains in Trentino. Here too, your four-legged friend must be kept on a lead and wear a muzzle. Small dogs that can be carried in a container (maximum 70x30x50 cm) are transported free of charge; for all other dogs, you must buy a full-price ticket. This excludes assistance dogs. You must carry their vaccination certificate or EU pet passport.
On ships (Lake Garda):
Dogs are welcome on ships operating on Lake Garda, provided space is available. Here too, for the safety of all passengers, your dog must be on a lead (no longer than 1.5m) and wear a muzzle. Dogs with a shoulder height of up to 50 cm are transported free of charge; taller dogs require their own reduced-price ticket. On hydrofoils, only small dogs in a container that can be held on your lap are permitted. Assistance dogs (including seeing-eye dogs) are excluded from these charges and are transported free of charge on all boats.
On cable cars:
Dogs are generally welcome on cable cars too. Your four-legged companion must wear a muzzle and be kept on a lead. Whether you need to buy a ticket for your dog depends on the individual cable car operator. Please check the current regulations with the operator before starting your journey.
