Folgaria

The municipality of Folgaria at 1,170 m a.s.l. with its numerous hamlets, including Costa, Serrada, Guardia, Mezzomonte, San Sebastiano, Carbonare and Nosellari is one of the most renowned summer and winter holiday resorts

Folgaria and its hamlets, Lavarone, Lusérn (Luserna) and Altopiano della Vigolana form the area of Alpe Cimbra. In winter, the Skiarea Alpe Cimbra, which belongs to the Skirama Dolomiti, features about 100 km of ski and snowboard slopes, cross-country ski tracks, telemark itineraries, mountaineer and backcountry skiing routes, sledging slopes, ice-skating rinks and snowshoe routes.

In summer Folgaria is an ideal holiday destination for the whole family thanks to its wide range of different activities, including walks in the forests, meadows or to various lakes, outdoor sports centres, mountain bike routes and the 18-hole golf course at the Golf Club Folgaria. The Botanic Gardens of Passo Coe are fascinating for their large variety of different plants, as well as for their morphology and the presence of karst formations.

The altopiano di Folgaria (Folgaria high plateau) reveals interesting exemplars of its century-long history. Around 1150 the prince-bishop of Trento gave Folgaria the concession of "Magnifica Comunità", which was tantamount to a large territorial autonomy. Subsequently the high plateau was controlled by the Republic of Venice before returning to the Austrian dynasty. During the Great War, the frontline passed right through Folgaria, where the Austro-Hungarians built three large fortifications: Forte Cherle, Forte Dosso del Sommo di Serrada and Forte Sommo Alto.

Like other villages, Folgaria has been honoured for the resistance opposed to the Nazi regime during World War 2. Every year on 15 August the inhabitants of the village remember the massacre of Malga Zonta near Passo Coe, where the Nazis shot 17 people in 1944.
