Vigo di Fassa, once an autonomous municipality and now a hamlet of the municipality of San Giovanni di Fassa - Sèn Jan, is a renowned starting point for the most unforgettable excursions into the fascinating world of the Dolomites. It offers stunning panoramic views on the peaks Cima Undici and Cima Dodici peaks, as well as the Sella and Marmolada massifs. The "balcone panoramico" (panoramic terrace) on Mt. Ciampedìe at 2,000 m a.s.l. is easily reachable with a modern cable car from the village of Vigo di Fassa and offers a stunning view of the Pale di San Martino. Here, the skiing season begins in late November, with artificial snowmaking systems ensuring snow even without natural snowfall.
Vigo di Fassa is also home to the Istituto Culturale Ladino, an institute devoted to the protection and research on the ancient language and Rhaeto-Romanic culture. In Ladin, Vigo is known as "Vich de Fascia".
