Stramentizzo

Stramentizzo (or Stramentizzo Nuovo) is a hamlet of the municipality of Castello-Molina di Fiemme in the Val di Fiemme

The origins of the village probably date back to around 1200 and its first inhabitants were probably German native speakers. It was first mentioned in documents in 1293 and in 1500 the first farmsteads were built along the road between the upper Val di Fiemme and Valfloriana. In 1777, the noble Felice Antonio von Longo Liebenstein purchased some of the village's houses and land and contributed to the development of the village. In 1920, Stramentizzo and the whole Venezia Tridentina were aggregated to the Kingdom of Italy. Having been an independent municipality for centuries, in 1925 Stramentizzo became a hamlet of the municipality of Castello di Fiemme.

At the beginning of May 1945, following the armistice of World War 2, the village became the scene of a violent battle between the local partisans and the soldiers of the SS, causing 31 victims.

In the late 1940s the whole village was evacuated, demolished and flooded with the waters of today's lago di Stramentizzo due to the construction of a dam (known as the diga di Stramentizzo) over the Avisio stream. After the conclusion of the works, the village, church included, was rebuilt. The new church Nuova chiesa dei Santi Angeli Custodi was erected between 1957 and 1958 and dedicated to the Holy Guardian Angles. This sacral building is made of many wooden elements, such as the roof and the ceiling. The major altar houses the altarpiece of the Guardian Angles from the previous church.
