Art Gallery of Fiemme

Follow in the footsteps of the Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme in a historic art gallery

The palace housing the art gallery of the "Magnifica Comunità Generale di Fiemme" in Cavalese is one of Trentino's most emblematic architectural buildings, as well as an important historical evidence of the thousand-year old traditions of self-administration and autonomy of the local population.

Today the palace hosts the Pinacoteca della Magnifica Comunità Generale di Fiemme, an art gallery exhibiting paintings by most famous exponents of the Fiemme School of painting, a group of artists active from the mid-17th century to the end of the 19th century. The first section of the exhibition is dedicated to some of the most essential documents of the Consortium of mountain municipalities (Comunità) and includes ancient copies of the valley's first legal documents, as well as minor evidence on the everyday life of local families.

The museum is home to the "Privilegio Enriciano" parchment in which the prince-bishop Enrico III conferred rights and autonomy to the Comunità, whose ancient coat of arms is well-visible on the frescoed faҫade of the museum. Awarded to the Comunità in 1588 by Lodovico Madruzzo, the crest is composed of six white stripes covered by a cross.

The 19th-century prisons, where prisoners immortalised their lives and sentences, are also worth visiting.

Please note: Due to wedding celebrations the opening hours could be subject to change on Saturday mornings.
