The apples of Trentino

An apple a day keeps the doctor away…

Despite the cultivable surface being limited to the valley floors and some high plateaux, Trentino is one of the most important high-quality apple cultivation areas of Europe. Apples are cultivated by Trentino farmers and then handed on to consortiums and cooperatives who are in charge of the quality check and the sale of these fruits. The most famous apple brands are for sure "la Trentina" and "Melinda".

Popular apple varieties include Golden Delicious, Stark Delicious, Granny Smith, Royal Gala, Winesap, Morgenduft, Fuji and Braeburn, as well as the more traditional Renetta and Canada. Almost all the apples derive from organic and biodynamic and integrated cultivation. This implies a drastic reduction of chemical substances which are replaced by natural and biological agents. The aim of this technique is to produce genuine fruits in an eco-friendly way as both consumers and producers are more concerned about the protection of the environment.

The Trentino cuisine uses apples for the preparation of some typical desserts, such as the famous "strudel di mele" and the "Smorum", a sweet omelet made of apples, eggs, flour and sugar.
