Former racing cyclist and winner of the Giro d’Italia in 2001 and 2003
Gilberto Simoni was born on 25th August 1971 in Palù di Giovo and is a retired Italian road cyclist and mountain biker, renowned as one of Italy's foremost stage race cyclists. In fact, during his career he won all the stages of the most prestigious cycle races and even as an amateur he triumphed over strong competitors like Ivan Gotti and Marco Pantani. His career as a pro-cyclist began in 1994 and concluded in 2010. He participated in the Giro d'Italia on 15 occasions, winning the competition in 2001 and 2003, coming in second in 2005 and third in 1999, 2000, 2004 and 2006.
Other important victories worth mentioning are those of the Giro del Veneto in 2004 and the Giro dell'Emilia in 2005.
In 2010, he retired from professional cycling and began organising bike tours in wonderful countries, such as Nepal, Costa Rica, Brazil and many others.
