This autumn hike on the altopiano di Brentonico runs across old chestnut groves to the medieval settlement of Castione
Image gallery: The magnificent chestnut groves of Brentonico
While the peaks of the Monte Baldo are already covered with snow, we still enjoy the warm autumn sun on the hills of the altopiano di Brentonico. Today is an ideal day for an autumn hike. We start in the centre of Brentonico and head to the outdoor sports centre on Via Clemente, north of the village. From there, we follow the signposts for path no. 3, the "percorso ai castagneti" (Chestnut Grove Trail).
Initially this path coincides with the "percorso natura" which features numerous information boards about the local flora and fauna, as well as the history of this area. Before reaching the chestnut groves, we walk past the ruins of Castello di Dosso Maggiore. The path proceeds towards Castione, a beautiful medieval hamlet. In October it hosts the "Festa del Marrone di Castione", organised by the association in charge of preserving these groves.
