The origins of Spiazzo date back to the sanctuary of S. Vigilio. It is said that Vigilio, the third bishop of Trentino suffered his martyrdom in this village during his last missionary trip in 405 AD. According to historical documents the bishop destroyed the former stele of Saturn which once stood on the site of today's main altar dedicated to S. Vigilio. This act shook the local population who beat him to death with wooden sticks and clogs.
Spiazzo is the historic centre of the Pieve di Rendena thanks to its central position. The 16th-century parish church of San Vigilio is artistically interesting, as its southern wall was decorated with frescoes by one of the Baschenis brothers and its western wall by Carlo Donati in 1923.
