Discovering the lesser known cultural goods of the Vallagarina, from Rovereto to the imposing fortress of Beseno

We start our autumn hike along the Art Trail (Percorso dell'Arte) at the Art Museum MART in Rovereto, the Modern and Contemporary Art Museum. We head towards the outskirts north or the city (Corso Bettini, Via Driopozzo, Via Donizetti) until we reach the Bosco della Città. The forest hill is one of the recreative areas of Rovereto. We continue along the sentiero di Dos de Gardole to the village of Volano with its scenic alleys and ancient buildings decorated with murals. The artistic gems in this area include the small St. Roch Church (chiesa di San Rocco) at the northern edge of the village. We continue walking uphill on the Dos dei Ovi and across the hilly landscape with vineyards until we reach the Finonchio mountain road.
The Art Trail branches off at a bend and runs along a forest path towards east. It leads past the Albiolo spring and arrives at the beautiful Castel Pietra. Below the ancient walls we have a well-deserved lunch in a nearby pizzeria. In the afternoon we continue hiking through the forests and descend to the valle del Rio Cavallo. At Dietrobeseno we switch valley side and follow the itinerary leading to Castel Beseno, the largest fortress complex of the Alps.
After visiting this fascinating fortress we descend along the Sentiero del Gac to Calliano from where we take the bus back to Rovereto. This 15 km long itinerary requires a whole day to be completed. It is highly recommended in autumn when the forests and vineyards turn golden, orange and red, immersing the whole landscape in a magical light play.
