Rovereto

With almost 40,000 inhabitants Rovereto is the second largest city of Trentino after Trento

The buildings in the historic centre of this important cultural, social and economical centre were heavily influenced by the Venetians and the marks the they left behind are still visible today.

Birthplace of some important artists including the painter and exponent of the Futurist movement Fortunato Depero, Rovereto is known for being a city where modern art flourishes and for this very reason it is also the seat of the MART, the museum of modern and contemporary art of Trentino. Within a few years this museum has become one of the most popular cultural centres for modern art in Europe. It organises different exhibitions and features an interesting permanent exhibition.

The Ossario di Castel Dante, a military memorial monument overlooking the city, houses the remains of more than 20,000 soldiers, including those of Fabio Filzi and Damiano Chiesa and reminds of the horrible atrocities that took place during the Great War. The Peace Bell on the Colle Miravalle rings every evening in memory of the fallen of all the wars, spreading peace and brotherhood among people and in the world. The War Museum situated in the Castello di Rovereto, boasts a rich collection of objects and documents dating back to the Great War.

Every year the city of Rovereto hosts the Palio Città della Quercia, one of the oldest athletics meetings in the world and the oldest one of Italy. This competition is part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Silver and attracts participants from all over the world.
