The Cammino dei Dinosauri near Rovereto, takes you back to the era when dinosaurs lived
Image gallery: Hike on the Dinosaurs’ Trail
Our starting point is the ossuary of Castel Dante above Rovereto (a convenient car park). We follow the 'Strada degli Artiglieri' slightly uphill across vineyards and forests towards south. We walk past the St. Barbara chapel and the gravestones dedicated to the fallen soldiers and after about 50 minutes of walking, we reach the start of the signposted "piste dei dinosauri", the dinosaur trail.
After a 10 minute walk we see a large rock ledge covered with tracks of big reptiles on the right. A steep slope (path no. 2) takes us to the observation points of colatoio Chemini where even more traces can be seen. Information panels tell interesting facts on the different tracks. The biggest ones measure a diameter of 30-40 cm and an average depth of around 10 centimetres. Both the size of the tracks and the stride length of more than 1 metre, gave researchers more cues about the dinosaur leaving them behind. The animal is said to be 5 to 6 metres long and to weigh between one and two tons.
We walk across the rocky landscape and return back to the starting point. From there, we retrace our steps back to Castel Dante.
Information: if you park your car at the beginning of the Dinosaurs' Trail, you will complete the trail in less than an hour.
