The Cammino dei Dinosauri follows dinosaur tracks in the Vallagarina near Rovereto
Image gallery: Hike on the Dinosaurs’ Trail
Our starting point is the ossuary of Castel Dante above Rovereto (a convenient car park). We follow the 'Strada degli Artiglieri' slightly uphill towards south across vineyards and forests. We walk by the chapel of St. Barbara and the tombstones dedicated to the fallen soldiers and after about 50 minutes of walking we reach the beginning of the signposted "piste dei dinosauri", the dinosaur trail.
After a 10 minute walk we see a large rock ledge on the right which is covered with the first traces of big reptiles. A steep slope (path no. 2) takes us to the observation points of colatoio Chemini featuring some more traces. Information panels tell interesting facts on the different tracks. The biggest ones measure a diameter of 30-40 cm and an average depth of around 10 centimetres. These measures, along with a stride length of over a metre, allowed researchers to discover more about the dinosaur, which is estimated to have been 5 to 6 metres long and to have weighed between 1 and two tons.
We complete this itinerary and descend to Castel Dante on the same path.
Information: if you park your car at the beginning of the Dinosaurs' Trail, it will take you less than an hour to complete it.
