The historic hotels and noble residences in Ruffré and at the Passo Mendola were built around 1900 when this area became a popular tourist destination throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The Mendola cable car between the village of Caldaro and the Passo Mendola was inaugurated in 1903 and covers the 850 m climb in a few minutes. The Mendola state road starts in the villages of Appiano and Caldaro in South Tyrol and leads up to Ruffré in narrow bends. For decades this road was the scene of car races.
Monte Penegal offers a spectacular panoramic view of Bolzano, the Val d'Adige, the Dolomites, Merano, the Val di Non, the Brenta Dolomites and the Ortles group. The sanctuary of San Romedio, a group of overlapping churches connected via a steep stairway with 131 steps, is only a few kilometres from the village of Ruffré.
