Lago di Cavedine

The lake of Cavedine lies in a beautiful basin at the foot of MonteBondone

The lake of Cavedine is embedded in a basin between the western slopes of Mt Bondone and the Marocche debris crest. This ridge formed following a landslide which gave origin to the lake. The 600 metre long body of water extends over a surface of 1 sq km and has a maximum depth of 50 metres. Located in the valle del basso Sarca, just 20 kilometres from the city of Trento, it is a natural habitat for several fish species and therefore a sought-after destination for anglers. The area around Lake Cavedine situated between the villages of Dro and Pietramurata is known as "Valle del Vent" due to the constant breeze from Lake Garda that blows here as well, attracting surfing and sailing enthusiasts.

Lake Cavedine was probably part of a postglacial lake basin which also included the lakes of Toblino and Santa Massenza to which it is still connected thanks to an artificial inlet known as Rimone Nuovo. The waters of the lake flow through an underground tunnel and into the hydroelectric power plant of Torbole.

The shores on the western side are characterised by an unspoilt natural landscape. Here grow both alpine and Mediterranean plants like olive and beech trees, holm oaks, bay trees and moss. In the lake live different waterbirds including swans, wild ducks, grey herons and coots. By the lakeside you will also find a windsurf and sailing school with a hire point and a bar with refreshment area.

The lake of Cavedine can be discovered during an interesting and not too challenging walk through the Valle dei Laghi. Another path not to miss is the sentiero delle Marocche di Dro which delights you with impressive natural landscapes.
