Winter hike to the Masi mountain hut

A forest road connects the spa village of Vetriolo near Levico and the Masi mountain hut, an ideal winter hike through the woods of the Alta Valsugana.

We reach Vetriolo Terme (1,480 m asl.) via the road, which proceeds from Levico into the Valsugana valley. The village of Vetriolo is located on a natural mountain ledge above the valley and offers a fantastic view across the high plateau of Folgaria, Lavarone and Luserna. Starting at the parking space of the Vetriolo Thermal Baths we reach the Osteria Maso Vetriolo Vecchio a little further east, where the forest road up to the Malga Masi hut starts.

The path no. 309 proceeds slightly uphill through the forest until approx. 1,750 m asl., the last section goes downhill, the Malga Masi mountain hut is located at 1,720 m asl., amidst a snowy meadow, at the feet of the Cima Panarotta (2,002 m asl.) and the Monte Fravort mountains. From here we have a beautiful panoramic view on the valleys of Borgo Valsugana. In winter the mountain hut has been opened at weekends, during the week it remained closed. Following damage from storm Vaia in October 2018, the restaurant had to close, since then it has been hoping for a reopening.

For our way back we chose the same route which leads us once again through the winter wonderwood. For this hike, snow shoes are not necessary, but if you want to walk further towards the La Bassa ridge, Cima Panarotta or Monte Fravort, snow shoes are required.
