Snowshoeing boasts a long tradition in some parts of the Trentino region. With snowshoes on your feet you can walk on snow without major efforts and contemporaneously enjoy the special peace and serenity of beautiful snow-covered winter sceneries.
In the past, snowshoes were used above all by hunters and farmers. Made from wood, leather and fibre, they served as a means of travelling. At the end of the 19th century new means of transport were discovered and people quickly forgot about snowshoes. Recently, however, snowshoeing gained reputation again. Today’s snowshoes are obviously made of lighter materials such as light metals or high tech plastics. Substantial progress with regards to technology and design was made.
Stunning snowshoeing walks can be made all over Trentino. Near Fondo in Valle di Non, every year, numerous participants take part in the so-called Ciaspolada, a hilarious snowshoeing race. The last time, the number of participants amounted to more than 6,000 people! Beside the inhabitants of the valley, there are sport enthusiasts from all of Europe, from America and Africa.
