Lake Nembia

The small Lake Nembia extends in the proximity of the better known Lake Molveno

The stunning Lake Nembia (800 m a.s.l.) lies at the foot of the impressive Brenta Dolomites and the Paganella massif only one kilometre south of Lake Molveno. It is only a stone's throw from the Adamello Brenta nature park and formed about 3,000 years ago following a landslide that blocked the valley and thus the water.

Unfortunately, the lake disappeared when its source, an emissary of Lake Molveno, was used for the hydroelectric power plant of Santa Massenza on the shore of the eponymous lake. During the construction of the hydroelectric system of the Sarca stream, the lake dried out and the area on its shores was abandoned. In the summer of 1995 the energy company ENEL initiated an environmental regeneration project. They recreated the lake floor and built an artificial inlet to guarantee constant water flow. Afterwards, the Province of Trento rewilded the area around the lake and equipped it with a recreational area. Today the lake is 400 metres long and 120 metres wide. Its deepest point is only 1.8 metres, making it ideal for a refreshing swim with children. On the shores live several animals, including squirrels, deer, roe deer and rare birds like the common raven.

The ENEL and the WWF set up a 3-km long educational path known as "percorso didattico Nembia". This entirely flat, circular itinerary connects Lake Nembia to Lake Molveno and can be completed either by foot or by bike. It is equipped with 14 information boards providing interesting facts on the local nature, culture and history. If you would like to discover the lake you can walk around it in a relaxing 30-minute walk. The recreational area on the lake shores is complete with two playgrounds, wooden tables and benches for picnics with your family, a restaurant offering delicious local food and a bar. The 20-metre high cliff in the surroundings features 10 climbing routes.

In summer, the lake is supervised by a life guard who ensures everyone is having a refreshing swim in total safety. Children can splash in the crystal-clear emerald-green water or play on the wooden bridge crossing the lake. In winter the lake never ices over thanks to its unique microclimate. It is therefore a sought-after destination for anglers who practise catch and release fishing (only with a valid fishing licence).
