Castel Beseno stands on a hill near Folgaria in the Vallagarina between Trento and Rovereto. It is the biggest fortress of Trentino and was built in a strategically important position. The monument was first mentioned in historic documents dating back to the 12th century, when it was a fief of the counts of Appiano and the residence of the Da Beseno noble family.

The castle's eventful history starts in 1470 as it was granted as a fief to the counts of Trapp, a noble family from Stiria, close to the emperor of Austria. After having been destroyed in a fire, the mediaeval castle was renovated and converted into a residence. In 1800 the castle was abandoned and given to the Autonomous Province of Trento. The monument was restored and is now one of the branches of the Museo del Castello del Buonconsiglio.

Castel Beseno is surrounded by two impressive elliptical curtain walls with a total length of 250 m and a width of about 50 metres. The big silvery bastions, the dark gates with the drawbridge and the portcullis, as well as the tournament field, are also worth mentioning.
