The mediaeval Castel Pietra is located at the edge of the village of Calliano in the Vallagarina. Its architecture, that mixes different styles, is the result of centuries of renovation, rebuilding and expansion works, however, the Gothic style prevails. The fortress houses some precious mediaeval treasures, like the "Sala del Giudizio", the court room with its impressive fresco cycle from the 15th century (1468-1478) which depicts scenes from life at the court.
Castel Pietra was built as an outpost for Beseno Castle which rises above it. The castle owes its name to its position on the edge of a cliff ("pietra" in Italian). The monument was erected in a strategic position and represented the border between the County of Tyrol and the Venetian Republic until the 16th century. Some battles that took place in this area, went down in history, such as the Battle of Calliano on 10 August 1487 or the battle between Austrian and French troops under Napoleon at the end of the 18th century.
Since 1738 the castle has been in the hands of the same family. Today, it hosts several events and can be visited.
