Hike from Sanzeno to the San Romedio pilgrimage site

The light walking-tour leads from the Basilica dei Martiri of Sanzeno to the pilgrimage site of San Romedio

This tour is a perfect alternative if the weather is not good enough to do an alpine mountain hike. We start at Sanzeno, where we visit the Basilica of the holy martyrs of Val di Non. We cross the centre of the village and carry on until the Museo Retico. On the opposite side the path branches off to San Romedio.

The path follows the steep face of the narrow valley, it's sheer hewn into the rock. After a walk of 45 minutes we reach the holy church of San Romedio, which is well known. To see this church is an amazing moment, on a steep rock it towers over the valley and seems to be an old haunted castle. A long stair of 131 steps leads up to the highest rooms, each of them with its own story and spirituality. In the Cappella Maggiore we find also the relics of S. Romedius (“the saint with the bear”).

We take the same way back to Sanzeno and visit also the Museo Retico, which tells the story of the “Anaunier”, probably a Celtic population who lived here in the pre-Roman times.
