A circular hike in the fields and forests of the altopiano della Predaia and the villages of Coredo, Tavon, Sfruz and Smarano

We chose a beautiful spring day for this hike but it is particularly recommended also in summer and even until late autumn. From the village of Coredo we walk towards Tavon. Once crossed this small village, we take the path to the lakes. The artificial lakes Lago di Tavon and Lago di Coredo are located in a basin between the hills and serve as irrigation reservoirs for the fruit orchards. In the surroundings you can find different sports facilities and refreshment points.
We cross the dam separating the two lakes to ascend the opposite hill and take the path coming from San Romedio. For a short section our path coincides with the Sentiero Frassati and Via Vigilius, two long-distance hiking routes. At the crossroads where the two paths split, there is a panoramic point which offers a stunning view on the nearby Santuario di San Romedio, a well-known sanctuary.
At the fork we keep to the right and ignore the signposts to Baita dei Sette Larici. We proceed southwards on the Sentiero Frassati (SF) towards Merlonga and Smarano. After another panoramic stop, this time at the terrazza della Madonnina dei Dossi overlooking the lakes Coredo and Tavon, we continue for almost one kilometre; shortly before arriving at Merlonga we turn left towards the green meadow of the Madonnina di Smarano chapel. Near the chapel starts a slightly uphill fitness trail through the forest (no. 3 - "Al bacino - 7 Larici") and in aboute 30 minutes we arrive at the Baita 7 Larici where we stop for a break.
We are now at the highest point of our hike and continue walking along path no. 16 towards Sfruz. This village is surrounded by large meadows offering an impressive view of the Brenta Dolomites. We descend through the fields towards Smarano where the forest gives way to blooming apple orchards, which we cross to complete our tour and return to Coredo.

- On the section between the lakes and the Baita, the route might be signposted with various names (4 passi ’n tel bosc – Four Steps in the Woods, Passeggiata della Merlonga, Sentiero Frassati, Via Vigilius…), but following our steps is less complicated than it might seem. Follow our directions and the .GPX track!
