Hike to the Coredo Lakes and the Sette Larici Hut

A circular hike through the fields and woods of the Predaia plateau and the villages of Coredo, Tavon, Sfruz and Smarano

We chose a spring day for this hike, but the route is recommended throughout the warmer months, right into late autumn. From the village of Coredo, we set off towards Tavon. We walk through this small hamlet, then follow the path towards the lakes. These are two artificial bodies of water nestled in a basin between the hills: Lake Tavon and Lake Coredo. The two reservoirs are used for irrigating the fruit orchards; several sports facilities and a refreshment stop can be found nearby.

We cross the dam separating the two lakes to climb briefly up the opposite slope, before joining the path coming from San Romedio. For a short stretch, our route coincides with the Sentiero Frassati and the Via Vigilius, two long-distance trails. At the junction where these two paths diverge, a viewpoint offers us a lovely view of the nearby Sanctuary.

At the junction, ignore the signs for Baita dei Sette Larici and keep right, continuing southwards on the Sentiero Frassati (SF), towards Merlonga and Smarano. After another scenic stop at the Madonnina dei Dossi terrace, overlooking the Coredo and Tavon lakes, we continue for almost a kilometre. Shortly before reaching the locality of Merlonga, we turn left towards the green clearing housing the Madonnina di Smarano chapel. Near the chapel, a fitness trail begins through the woods, climbing gently (no. 3 - “Al bacino - 7 Larici”); in about half an hour, we reach the Baita 7 Larici, where we gladly take a welcome break.

Having reached the highest point, we now continue on path no. 16 towards Sfruz. The village, surrounded by vast meadows, offers a beautiful view of the Brenta Dolomites. Through the fields, we descend towards Smarano. Here, the woods give way to apple orchards, which we find in bloom in spring, and walk through them to complete our circuit and return to Coredo.
