The cloudy sky in late May does not provide the ideal conditions for an alpine tour, which is why we decide to walk along the cammino Jacopeo d'Anaunia at a lower altitude. We start our tour in
Sanzeno, where we visit the Basilica of the Holy Martyrs of the Val di Non. Then, we cross the centre of the village and continue to the Museo Retico, where the path to the Santuario di San Romedio branches off.
We follow the path along the steep side of this narrow valley. It then continues, excavated in the rock, towards the well-known sanctuary. After a 45-minutes walk, we reach San Romedio, the most interesting example of medieval and Renaissance Christian art in Trentino, which stands on a rock. It is composed of various churches and chapels, all connected by a steep staircase with 131 steps, leading up to the highest rooms. Each tells a truly unique history and vouches for the spirituality of its patrons throughout the centuries. In the evocative Cappella Maggiore, we admire the relics of St Romedius, the Saint with the bear on a leash.
We return along the same path and stop to visit the Museo Retico, a museum dedicated to the history and life of the Rhaetians, from Prehistoric to Pre-Roman times.
