At the foot of the Marmolada: this hike on the Viel del Pan in Canazei in the Val di Fassa follows one of the most beautiful and panoramic paths of the Dolomites

Passo Fedaia, with its small lake, is the final destination of our trip on the Viel del Pan. This path follows the mountain ridge at 2,400 m a.s.l. which separates the Sella and Marmolada. We start from Canazei, taking the Belvedere cable car to Pecol. From here, a second cable car climbs even higher to Col di Rossi, but we decide to walk the last 400 metres uphill. The landscape below Passo Pordoi is characterised by a stunning alpine meadow. Apparently, the marmots of this area are not at all scared of hikers, only retreating into their burrows when we are only a few metres away.
The ascent continues alongside the downhill bike course and offers amazing views of the Gruppo del Sella and the Sassolungo. Some clouds cover the sun but we are glad it is not too hot while as we climbe this steep slope. Once at the peak, Col di Rossi, we pause to enjoy the stunning view of the Dolomites. This is where the Viel del Plan begins, a carriageway to the eponymous mountain hut. From the hut, the itinerary continues on a narrow path to Passo di Fedaia. We recommend climbing just below the Sass Ciapel to discover stunning views of Arabba, the Alta Badia, the Sella and the Gruppo del Fanes.
On the other side, we see the Marmolada glacier with Lago di Fedaia at its foot. At the lakeside the Viel del Pan ends and from here on the path becomes steep and challenging, so you need to watch your step. At Lago di Fedaia, we take the bus back to Canazei.
